Gorreana Tea Plantation in the Azores, Portugal

Best Instagram Spots in the Azores

Instagram Spots of the Azores

The Azores are an archipelago of nine islands in the Atlantic Ocean that are still fairly new to hosting visitors. This means they remain very untouched with nature being the key reason to explore the Azores. The colors of the islands really come out in photographs and your Instagram feed will be full of beautiful greens and blues!

Best Instagram Spots in the Azores:

Boca do Inferno Viewpoint

This is probably the most photographed spot on São Miguel Island. The Boca do Inferno (“King’s View”) viewpoint is known for a scenic walkway leading to an expansive view of the caldeira and the lakes below. Another path along the viewpoint walkway will lead you to this spot that gives amazing perspective on the landscape.

Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of the Peace Chapel)

Situated above the town of Vila Franco do Campo, Nossa Senhora da Paz is perhaps the prettiest church we’ve ever seen and one of our favorite Instagram spots in the Azores! There are just over 100 steps to the top where you get a birds eye view over the town and ocean. Also, although you can’t see in this photo, the church is surrounded by thousands of colorful hydrangeas!

Salto do Cabrito Waterfall

If you do the hike to get to this waterfall, a dip in the water and the photo to prove it will be well worth the effort! Salto do Cabrito is one of many gorgeous waterfalls in the Azores, so even if you don’t visit this one, you’ll have plenty of Insta opportunities during your visit!

Farol Ponta do Arnel (Arnel Lighthouse)

You can see the Arnel lighthouse from Miradouro da Vistas dos Barco, a nearby viewpoint in the Nordeste area of São Miguel Island. But, we’d recommend the challenging hike from the main road down to the lighthouse for a much better look! Arnel is the oldest lighthouse in the Azores and a great photo spot.

Jardim Botânico José do Canto

The José do Canto Botanical Garden is one of two very highly photographed parks in the city of Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island. (The other is Jardim António Borges) You’ll want to snap an Insta photo at the giant fig tree located to the left just inside the park.

Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo (and other miradouros)

The Azores are full of miradouros, or viewpoints, from which you get amazing views of the islands. Truly, it’s hard to take a bad photo from any of these miradouros! This Instagram photo was taken from the viewpoint above Lagoa do Fogo (“Fire Lake”) on São Miguel Island. It gives truly meaning to the island’s nickname, “The Green Island!”

Gorreana Tea Plantation

Search the hashtag #gorreana and you’ll come across thousands of Insta photos showing row upon row of tea plants at the Gorreana Tea Factory. It is one of only two remaining tea plantations in Europe and both are located on São Miguel Island. Don’t just stop for the photo, however, make sure you go inside to try some of the tea!

Gruta do Natal

This cave is a lava tube that was formed by a now extinct volcano on Terceira Island. Visitors can explore inside with the help of a guide and proper safety equipment. Of course, it’s not easy to snap photos inside the dark cave, but our guide, Gui, from Azores 38ºN, helped us snap some fun pics on the way out!

“Haunted Forest” of Terceira Island

Is this really the name of the forest? Probably not! But that’s the term of endearment our guide Gui (mentioned above) gives this beautiful, dark forest on Terceira Island. The hints of light through the trees provide some really beautiful photo opps!
