Our Favorite Spots on São Miguel Island

There are SO many things we loved about the Azores, but we especially enjoyed how untouched the islands are and the diversity of the landscape. It would take forever to list all the great spots on Sao Miguel Island, but here’s a brief look at our top 9!

9 Must-Visit Spots on Sao Miguel Island:

Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of the Peace Chapel)

Way up a hill above the town of Villa Franco de Campo, you’ll find the most beautiful church called Nossa Senhora da Paz (It’s on Day 1 of our Sao Miguel Island driving itinerary). And surrounding the church are thousands of gorgeous hydrangeas. Of course, you’ll see hydrangeas all over Sao Miguel Island, but there’s just something special about the way these flowers are growing all around the church.

Boca do Inferno Viewpoint

Miradouro da Boca do Inferno is probably the island’s most popular spot (you know you’ve seen the iconic photos of the path lined with a wooden railing). But we think you can get an even more spectacular photo (below) if you follow the side path to the left just a short distance!

Ferraria Hot Springs

This thermal pool is attached directly to the Atlantic Ocean and you climb in via a ladder on the rocks! It’s free for visitors and there are changing rooms available. Make sure you visit at low tide when the water is warmest.

Farol Ponta do Arnel (Arnel Lighthouse)

Hiking to the Arnel Lighthouse is a challenge, but we think it was worth the effort! The incline is 35% incline — whatever you do, don’t try driving your rental car down!

Lagoa das Furnas

The Lagoa das Furnas Hotsprings give you a chance to see the bubbling geysers where locals cook the famous cozido stew. (It definitely has to be on your list of foods to eat in the Azores!) Access to the park where the geysers is €2.

The Fig Tree at José do Canto Botanical Garden

While we enjoyed the entire botanical garden (located in Ponta Delgada), hanging out under the shade of the giant Moreton Bay fig was our favorite spot. Plus, it makes for an adorable Instagram spot!

Salto do Cabrito Waterfall

If you’re seeking out the best waterfalls of the Azores, you’ll definitely need to make sure Salto do Cabrito is on your list. It’s a bit of hike to get here, but it’s truly a magical spot.

Terra Nostra Park

The lovely Terra Nostra Park is like Jurassic Park right in the middle of the small town of Furnas! The main attraction is the hot springs, which is one of many hot springs you should visit in the Azores. Once you’re done in the pool, wander the park to see the massive collection of trees, flowers, ferns, and other plants.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades

While you’re on the western side of the island, head over to Lagoa das Sete Cidades and rent some kayaks for the afternoon. The lake is actually made up of two two bodies of water: Lagoa Verde (green lake) and Lagoa Azul (blue lake). You can paddle between them by going under a bridge.
